Neville
The recent book by Brenda James,
Henry Neville and the Shakespeare
Code, champions Sir Henry Neville as
Shakespeare. As with Oxford, Neville
has the education, travel, and social
connections seen to be lacking in the
Stratford man. The greatest argument
in his favour seems to be that his birth
and death coincide closely with the
Shakespeare's life, unlike Oxford, who
was older, and died in 1604.
Problems with the Neville case
The Nevile case is based on a "code", cracked by author Brenda James, which purports that the
cryptic dedication at the beginning of the 1609 edition of Shake-speare's Sonnets reveals that Sir
Henry Neville was the real author. The use of crytpology in the Bacon and Oxford cases has a long
history, and has become synonymous with Shakespeare authorship skepticism. Strangely, all three
have found their candidate's authorship revealed in the same dedication. The Marlowe case, in stark
contrast to all of the other candidates, requires no decoding––he alone demonstrated the ability to
write plays and poetry at a Shakespearean level, and in the Shakespearean style.
The entire case for Neville, like the cases for all other candidates but Marlowe, is entirely
circumstantial. He had the necessary education, the right record of foreign travel, connections to
Southampton, and there is a coincidence of phrases of common usage found in the Shakespeare
works and Neville's letters. Perhaps fortunately for Ms. James, there are no poems or plays with
which we can compare Neville's style (if in fact one existed) to the Shakespeare plays and poems.
When faced with this huge void of evidence, the recent popularity of the Neville case is surprising.
Unlike Christopher Marlowe, as with the rest of the other candidates, there is no evidence that Neville
could write verse of the quality found in the works of Shakespeare.
